Workforce report 2023

🌎 The NHS sits in the UK but is made up of staff from every corner of the globe.

📰 Last month, the GMC released Workforce report: The state of Medical Education and Practise in the UK. The report details how even with expansions of medical school places, continuing to attract skilled international medical graduates (IMGs) will be essential.

📉Doctor shortages are already adding pressure to our NHS, so increasing domestic supply is a must. However, we must not neglect the importance of IMGs, who in 2022 made up 52% of doctors who joined the workforce.

🤝 The report emphasises how we need to improve how we integrate and retain doctors who first trained abroad, ensuring that doctors from a wide range of backgrounds are welcomed into supportive

💭Despite these facts, we must remember that healthcare workforce shortages are a global challenge. We must be conscious not to worsen the problem globally, just to resolve our issue locally, and we must build to a future where each country worldwide has the educational infrastructure to facilitate recruitment of domestic and international talent.

How would you suggest we tackle this challenge?
